Sustainability as a Strategic Lever for Innovation, Operational Efficiency, and Long-Term Growth
With clearly defined targets for net-zero emissions and a corporate culture rooted in data, inclusion, and responsible technology, NTT DATA is reshaping how sustainability drives business value.
For years, sustainability was perceived as a forward-looking aspiration — an optional layer to business strategy. Today, for companies leading digital and social transformation, it’s an operating mandate. ESG maturity begins when sustainability is no longer peripheral but embedded across governance, operations, and innovation cycles.
At NTT DATA, this integration has been a natural progression. Talent development and employee well-being are foundational to our corporate values — making sustainability both a strategic priority and a cultural commitment. Progress against our ESG goals is tracked through a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) monitored on a monthly and annual basis. These indicators are integrated into the Executive Committee dashboard, providing the CEO and senior leadership with a clear view of progress toward sustainability objectives and ensuring accountability at the highest level. Transformation at scale requires leadership from the top.
Sustainability as a strategic principle
The impact of this vision resonates throughout the entire organization. From supplier management and workforce policies to data center design and workplace infrastructure, sustainability is no longer siloed — it’s a shared responsibility that enhances operational efficiency, reduces enterprise risk, and strengthens competitive positioning.
From Tangible Outcomes to Future Commitments
Our most recent Sustainability Report for Europe and Latin America highlights strong progress: in the past fiscal year, 87% of our electricity consumption came from certified renewable sources. We avoided over 34,000 tons of CO₂ through a mix of flexible work models, on-site energy generation, and electric fleet adoption — and offset remaining emissions through reforestation projects and low-emission logistics. We also implemented data minimization strategies, removing 375,000 GB of redundant data and avoiding nearly 94 metric tons of CO₂. And donated more than 1,500 IT devices to schools and social organizations, extending the lifecycle of technology assets and promoting digital inclusion.
Technological innovation to minimize environmental impact
As one of the largest global providers of data center infrastructure, we continue to drive sustainability at the core of our operations — from immersion liquid cooling and chip-level thermal management to our commitment to reach 100% renewable energy use across all facilities by 2030. What’s next? Looking ahead, our roadmap includes achieving carbon neutrality for scopes 1 and 2 by 2035, and for scope 3 by 2040. As a steering member of the Green Software Foundation, we also play an active role in shaping the new ISO standard for measuring software carbon intensity (ISO/IEC PRF 21031).
Diversity, inclusion, and a sustainable value chain
But sustainability extends beyond environmental goals. It encompasses our broader commitment to social equity and inclusive growth. Today, women represent 32.6% of our workforce, and we have a clearly defined strategy to expand gender diversity across leadership levels. We also collaborate with suppliers to embed ESG criteria into procurement processes and provide training to accelerate their sustainability readiness.
A shared responsibility with clients and society
Sustainability is not limited to internal operations — it also extends beyond our organization. Technology in general, and AI in particular, represent a significant opportunity to drive progress toward a more sustainable world when applied responsibly.
This gives us a critical role: supporting our clients in measuring, reducing, and reporting their digital emissions while advancing toward operating models based on renewable energy and circular economy principles. We focus on five strategic areas: corporate sustainability strategy, climate and nature action, sustainable value chains, green IT transformation, and smart sustainability.
A path toward responsible and sustainable growth
Sustainability is a cross-cutting strategy that unites innovation, talent, and purpose. In addition to enhancing brand reputation or mitigating regulatory risks, it now plays a vital role: it is the most coherent and forward-looking approach organizations can take to ensure long-term growth.
