Telefónica and everis join forces with Internet Para Todos (IpT) to reduce the digital gap in Latin America

everis, multinational consultancy company, joins Telefónica to collaborate in the initiative Internet para Todos Perú (IpT), a wholesale telecommunications infrastructures operator that aims to expand the internet connectivity in rural areas of Latin America. Resulting from this collaboration, everis will be in charge of the deployment and maintenance of the Operation Support Systems (OSS) that enable the creation and sustainment of a reliable and quality network.

IpT project has been created to bring mobile connectivity over the rural environment in Latin America, where almost 100 million people do not count with access to mobile broadband and the benefits it provides [1]. Likewise, the initiative focuses on the economic sustainability of the project, so it is based and developed in an end-to-end open source technology model.

A technological challenge set on open source models

IpT Perú, as rural telco operator needs a business model that enables the optimization of operating costs, without an impact in the quality of the services provided. Due to that necessity, and in order to maintain a high-efficiency service, its deployment is based on disruptive technologies and open-source ones.

In that way, the solutions that are already been deployed by everis for IpT are based on open models, so in mobile access network, as well as in real-time network systems, apart from advanced network data analytics systems, AI and machine learning applications, among others.

The challenge that Telefonica – from its global innovation area and GCTIO Architecture – and everis face, is the design and deployment of the new generation of Operation Support Systems (OSS) for the telecom company. These systems, designed in compliance with TODA (Telefónica Open Digital Architecture) model, will provide IpT the efficiency, flexibility, and integrity required.

According to Francisco Javier García Jiménez, Head of Global Architecture BSS/OSS in Telefónica; ‘the new network generations, along with the virtualization, open a new scenario in Everything as a Service (XaaS), which allows us to focus on our clients, providing services properly and on time. Uniformly, it will demand a change in our way to evolve, operate and maintain our technology; and for that, in Telefónica we are transforming our OSS, key systems in the journey to XaaS we are currently on.’

Broadly speaking, this architecture will allow to deploy with agility new network technologies, like  5G, and go forward to paradigms such as the open and disaggregated networks that set the base to accelerate innovation and optimize deployment’s costs in the area when it comes to telecom networks.

From his perspective, Juan Campillo, Connectivity Innovation Director in Telefónica claims ‘traditional network support systems are not the best option to operate new generation networks. Usually, you will obtain isolated visions and turns difficult to get a broader and complete vision of what is actually happening in the network. Furthermore, more complex integrations result in an increase in costs.’

This new OSS systems developed under TODA architecture are known for:
•    High degree of automation
•    Data-Driven (architecture driven by data)
•    Open and integrated systems
•    “App Plugin”. Systems that enable an easy and quick incorporation of new capabilities required by the business

From the everis side, Teodoro López, partner in the Telecom sector of the company, considers that ‘it is exciting to contribute with the telecom industry, and in that way reinforces our position as a strategic and trusted partner of Telefónica. Take advantage of all our expertise years in the business, joining it with the infrastructure and presence of this partner in different markets, allows us to turn projects like this to reality.’

For López, this project opens new collaboration opportunities with Telefónica, aiming to accelerate innovation altogether. This new partnership strengthens the message of being pioneers in the deployment of new key OSS to turn to reality 5G, making use of virtualized networks.
